The British Heart Foundation was born in 1961 by a group of medical professionals who were concerned about the increasing death rate from cardiovascular disease.  The focus was to fund extra research into the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of heart and circulatory disease.

The British Heart Foundation fund over £100 million worth of research each year.   This all goes into all heart and cirulatory diseases and the things that cause them.

Heart Diseases, Stroke, Vascular Dementia, and Diabetes are all connected, and the British Heart Foundation are looking into all of them.

The BHF are research.  The promise of future preventions, treatments and cures.

Research by BHF has given us machines that can restart hearts, the ability to fix arteries in babies. The power to give someone a heart if they need one, and so much more.

All the above is thanks to donations from the general public.

  • Heart Disease

In 1961, 8 out of 10 babies born with a congenital heart defect died before their first birthday.   Thanks to research 8 out of 10 babies now survive to adulthood.

  • Progress in diagnosis and treating heart attacks.

In the 1960’s 7 out of 10 heart attacks were fatal.  These days, at least 7 out of 10 people survive.

There’s a long way to go as Heart and Circulatory disease still kills 1 in 4 people in the UK.

From dangerous DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis), to pre-eclampsia that threatens pregnant women and their unborn babies, the BHF continue to invest millions in research in circulatory conditions.
